We did it before. We'll do it again.

In 2004 we celebrated that thousands of animals got a reprieve from a surefire death sentence. We celebrated that we saved seven endangered species. We celebrated that the State of California had bought 640 acres of land and set it aside as the untouchable Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. We celebrated that cycle of life would continue. And we celebrated all the people and organizations who joined together to accomplish this.
* * *
But today, there is a new threat! Those 640 protected acres -- the ones everyone believed would be left alone -- once again are in serious jeopardy.

And so, as part of Celebrate Ballona 2014, we are going back to our friends! Former L.A. City Councilmember Bill Rosendahl will be honored with the presentation of the first "Ellen Stern Harris Coastal Champion Award." U.S.Congressmembers Janice Hahn and Maxine Waters, and former California Governor Gray Davis will receive honors and sit at the head table. They understand why we must save the wetlands. And they work hard to help us.

This time the threat is more insidious. Because now the state, itself, is in partnership with two extraordinarily rich private foundations -- The Annenberg Foundation and
The Bay Foundation (???) . Massive and major land-moving plans are being cloaked under a premise of "restoration." Which means lethal blows to the seven endangered species currently thriving in the wetlands.

* * *
Enough is enough. This new project is NOT a restoration. Ten years ago opinion leaders said saving the wetlands would be impossible. Yet, these videos prove we could do it. And that we can do it again.
