Dear Supervisor _________________:

You are in a unique position to save a beautiful majestic bird - the Great Blue Herons - and their nesting site on the coast of Los Angeles.

There are two significant threats to the Great Blue Heron remaining as a year-round resident of the Ballona Valley.

1. The plans to demolish the levees on Ballona Creek and embark on a massive excavation of wetlands and uplands - both of which are necessary for the survival of young herons, newly fledged from their nearby nests.  For the first year or so, the primary diet for these just-fledged birds consists of small mammals and lizards, which are abundant in the uplands of the land north of Ballona Creek and part of the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve.   The excavation plans to remove the soils and home for these animals that are food for the young Herons would be devastating for the Ballona Wetlands' population of Great Blue Herons.  The County Dept. of Public Works has submitted plans to the US Army Corps of Engineers for a Section 408 permit that would allow this project to proceed.

2. The plans by the County Dept. of Beaches & Harbors and Mariners Village's lessee to remove more than 1,000 trees in this residential nature sanctuary on the waterfront at Marina del Rey would destroy what little remain of the Great Blue Heron rookery that had been re-establishing itself during the past 15 years after this species had been previously hunted out of the region more than 100 years ago.

Both of these projects can be stopped by you, one of our Los Angeles County Supervisors.  Please save the Great Blue Heron as a year-round resident of the Ballona Valley on the Los Angeles coast.

Herons Park Forever!

Thank you.

Sincerely,
